Beat the Brownlee Brothers Challenge
The ‘Beat the Brownlee Brothers’ challenge is a day of in-school activity where KS2 children aim to travel a set distance through cycling and running. The set distance is the distance that Alistair and Jonny typically complete in a training week. All equipment is provided on the day and all classes from KS2 take part.
Whilst there is a specific target distance to achieve for the challenge, the focus for the children taking part is still very much on participation and inclusivity. The goal is for children to do their personal best and the challenge is suitable for children of all abilities to take part. The bikes are set up on turbo trainers making them stationary so children unable to ride a bike can participate.
Each class or year group is allocated a timeslot, at the end of their timeslot the distance they have travelled by running and cycling is calculated. Each of the distances travelled by each class or year group are then added together and at the end of the school day, a final assembly is held to reveal if the school have managed to ‘Beat the Brownlee Brothers’.
The challenge is designed to support our Pathways work. At the end of each challenge, all children who have participated are given information on where they can continue to take part in the sports they have experienced on a regular basis. By making the focus of the challenge all about personal best, we hope each child has a positive experience and are then encouraged to continue being active.
